Knowledge is a valuable and intangible asset. For companies both large and small creativity and innovation creates a competitive advantage, while the incurred knowledge sustains that advantage. Our society tends to view individual knowledge as property and our ownership of that property is very important. To stay viable, companies must protect their proprietary knowledge. To stay employed and be competitive in this insane job market, individuals must attain a higher level of knowledge than their peers.

Security is a different beast entirely. Information security is relatively young industry.  Our job is keeping people safe.  As information security professionals, we are protecting not only our company’s assets but also the employees and customers of that company.  Our ability to share knowledge, correlate that data to find meaningful patterns, and help educate our peers improves our industry as a whole helping that end goal of keeping safe. We must overcome the inherit human obstacle of knowledge sharing, and advance the state of information security.

This is the unspoken goal of the Security Bloggers Network. If you touch information security in any part of your job, add the SBN to your RSS reader.  Both the breadth and depth of knowledge coming from these folks is insane.  It is a fire hose in blog form.

From the about page:

  • “Welcome to the Security Bloggers Network. We provide access to all of the best content from the best security focused bloggers around the world.”

I am a new and proud member of the SBN. Hopefully I can help elevate the conversation, improve information security as a profession, and ultimately keep people safe.
